The number and complexity of government rules and regulations impacting businesses continue to increase. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established standards for levels of pollutants that may be discharged into sewer systems and storm water drains. Many local agencies have even more strict codes and require periodic sampling. What can you do to comply with these regulations without incurring burdensome costs? Many facilities are equipped with underground sumps or oil, grease, and sand separators. These separators and sumps can be expensive to maintain as they require routine cleaning, pumping and hauling of waste to operate in compliance and eliminate odors. Our experience with several hundred facilities has proven that this maintenance expense can be reduced by one-half to two-thirds by the process of bioremediation.
Bioremediation (also called on-site bio-waste minimization) is a cost-effective tool in the endless chore of waste disposal. Just as our bodies provide an internal means of breaking down the grease and oil that we consume, nature provides us with natural bacteria that break down many types of grease and oils including petroleum hydrocarbons. With bioremediation, these contaminates are broken down into water, carbon dioxide and other innocuous components. Thee microbes are not “picky” eaters and are effective on a broad range of contaminates as long as they are in a relatively neutral pH solution. This approach provides the major advantage of eliminating contaminates, instead of moving them someplace else. For instance, with our microbial solution, Arizona Bio, hydrocarbon content as high as 30,000 ppm can be reduced to levels of less than 5 ppm in a 60 day period.
Bioremediation is a simple process. In most cases, the microbes are added to the wastewater drain automatically by a dispensing pump. This will help to ensure that the microbial concentration is kept constant. Other alternatives include adding the microbes manually to the sump/separator or simply “spiking” the mop water.
Bioremediation is effective in any application where grease and oil in waste water is a concern. It is useful for many industries and home owners alike including:
